I’ll dive straight into it – here are the tools I use and why!
1. BUTANE GAS BURNER
This makes igniting your wood and lumpwood at the back of the pizza oven a real doddle. It will take up to a minute to light up the fuel and the canister lasts for a very long time.
2. WOODEN LAUNCH PIZZA PEEL
I am a big fan of wooden launch peels. I sprinkle some semolina onto the peel, pull my pizza onto it and prepare the pizza from there. I prefer the light wood versions rather than a heavy wood peel for ease of use. I use the Eppicotispai Wooden Launch Peel.
3. METAL TURNING PIZZA PEEL
I use a 7″ metal pizza turning peel; it’s a great size for making pizza up to 12″. If you are new to turning pizza, the more you practice the better you will get. When I started turning pizza for the first time I was awkward, flipped it, nudged it and kept getting the peel stuck under the pizza with no movement. It took a bit of practice, but not that much, so you will be skilled up in no time! I use the 7″ Gozney Turning Pizza Peel.
4. LASER THERMOMETER
To ensure your pizza stone reaches the right cooking temperature, it’s important that you have something to measure it with! The laser thermometer does just that and it’s so easy to use. I cannot cook pizza without one! I use the Etekcity Laser Thermometer.
ONLY USE A METAL PIZZA PEEL TO COOK YOUR PIZZA
LIGHTWEIGHT PIZZA PEELS ARE EASIER TO USE THAN HEAVY PEELS
5. HEAT PROOF BBQ GLOVES
I use gloves when I want to remove or turn the hot pizza stone. These gloves are great for the wood burner and allow you to manage your fire without getting burnt. These are similar to the BBQ Gloves I use.
That’s 5 key items, which are all reasonably priced and have lasted me a good few years already. Although, I did melt my original laser thermometer by leaving it on the table in front of the very hot Ooni 3 a few years ago and I learnt from that!
I’ve created a Pizza for Beginners YouTube playlist that gives some great tips to help you with your learning to cook pizza journey!
