Ooni Volt 12 Pizza Oven Impressions and Review | 6 months Later

Hi and welcome to our learning-to-cook pizza and calzone journey! We bought the Ooni Volt 12 in March 2023 and today we review and share our impressions of the Ooni Volt 12 Pizza Oven after using it for just over 6 months.

I bought this oven in March 2023 and this is an independent review.

Let’s start off with the oven structure.  I’ve found the shape and size of this oven a great fit for my worktop.  Although I wouldn’t want this oven to be any heavier or bigger than it is.  The outer shell looks modern and it’s easy to wipe down.  The door closes nicely and provides good viewing access. 

The oven has simple-to-use controls.

The oven has 3 dials, the left dial is the timer, however, I haven’t been using that for cooking pizza but have used it for dish recipe cooks.

The dial in the centre is for the temperature regulation – just turn the dial and it shows the temperature of the oven and pings when it has reached that temperature.  The dial on the right is the balance and boost dial.  I don’t use that dial much either as when I set the temperature, the oven sets an automatic balance for me. 

For example, for a 450c high-heat pizza cook, I turn the oven on, turn the dial in the centre to 450c and when that pings ready, I launch the pizza.  The balance automatically shows…… which works fine with my cook.  But it’s great to have the option to change the heat balance from the stone to the top when needed.  

This dial also has a boost function which is very handy.  You just turn the dial anticlockwise all the way around, and that will boost your stone should you need to do that.  It lasts for 45 seconds.

Inside, The Volt uses the same type of pizza stone as the other Ooni range pizza ovens so you are getting the outdoor pizza stone experience, inside.  So I’m very happy with that and I also like the colour of the central light.  It produces a nice bright, flame coloured glow.

The Volt provides quite a consistent and even heat distribution. There is a hot spot at the back of the oven.  However, having an accurate electric temperature control does help to manage your pizza cooking.  I also use a laser thermometer to check the temperature of the stone.

This oven heats up quickly, however, the pizza cook times are not faster than a gas or wood pizza oven.  My pizza cooks are averaging approximately 2 minutes at the moment.

It is as easy to set up as a gas-fired pizza oven but is a lot easier to cook in as you are not managing your pizza crust near naked flames. So with this oven, I can just chill a bit more as it cooks.

One of the main disadvantages of electric high-heat pizza ovens is their initial cost. I paid £799 for this oven and that was a lot more than the Koda and Karu outdoor pizza ovens. However, it’s essential to consider the potential long-term savings in energy costs and also the ability to cook inside whenever I want.

This Volt is versatile and can be used for more than just pizza, however, I only use it for high-heat cooking – I use my standard electric oven for everything else.

Even though this oven is portable and can be used outside when it’s dry, it will require a stable electrical power source, limiting its use in outdoor settings or locations without reliable access.

Every time I use the Volt I need to make room for it as my kitchen doesn’t have enough worktop space and in addition to that I had to find an indoor storage area for it too.  So Consider the available space in your home.  Electric pizza ovens come in various sizes, so choose one that fits your space and meets your cooking needs.

With regard to keeping it clean, The glass has steamed up sometimes on the inside but it does disappear- I don’t know why or what causes that to happen but it hasn’t blocked my vision during the cook.

The glass can get dirty, so I clean it when it’s cooled down after use.  I turn the stone over after every cook to burn off any debris and also face the side with the most debris towards the back.

The decision to buy an electric pizza oven depends on your preferences, lifestyle, and how you plan to use the oven.

In summary, an electric pizza oven can be worth it if you prioritize convenience, indoor use, quick heating, and ease of operation. Consider your specific needs, preferences, and budget.  I have found it a great investment – compared to last Autumn when I had to cook outside to make pizza, escaping the cold wind and showers. Now I can cook in the warmth of my kitchen and in the dark evenings.   So it’s really changed things up for me in a very positive way and going forward I will always want to have an electric pizza oven to use in my kitchen.  So investing in the Volt was a wise decision for me.
