Ooni Karu 16 Wood Fired Pizza Cook
I bought the Ooni Karu 16 in June 2021 and this is my wood-fired pizza cooking video using it!
The Ooni Karu 16 is a multi-fuelled pizza oven and is the big brother to the Ooni Karu 12 Pizza Oven.
This fuel burner loaded with lump-wood and real wood heated up the oven in 15 minutes.
Again, for this second wood-fired cook, the oven only took 15 minutes to heat up. For this cook I used Ooni SourDough Pizza Dough and heated the centre of the stone up to 430c.
The pizza cooked in just 68 seconds with only 2 rotations. The glass door is super, I’ve really enjoyed using it because the glass stays clear during the cook.
The vents within the oven appear to pull the flames and smoke over the pizza toward the chimney in an efficient way. There are vents in the door that help keep the glass clear.
For the pizza toppings I used block mozzarella cheese which I grated from frozen. The wispy flames floated over the cheese and the salami that I’d hidden underneath, giving them both a lovely cook in a very short time.
This pizza oven so far has been super at cooking pizza with wood. I am very happy with the size of the wood grate and it’s easy to top up with small logs and lump-wood because of the hatch lid size.
This is an easy wood-fired oven to use.
I love cooking with wood and this pizza oven makes it easy to do that. The handles are well designed, but they can get hot so be careful and wear heat-resistant gloves. As they are black they don’t show any soot and lump-wood dirt from the grate.
But this oven doesn’t just cook pizza, it can cook all sorts of dishes and I will be cooking something nice in a cast-iron pan – looking forward to that!
I’ve created a Pizza for Beginners – Learning to Cook Pizza and How to Use Pizza Ovens YouTube playlist that gives some great tips to help you with your learning to cook pizza journey!
