The main steps of the seasoning process are:

  • give the pan a wash and dry
  • lightly spread some vegetable oil over the inside of the pan
  • place the pan upside down on foil and season in an electric oven at 205c for 60 minutes
  • leave the pan to cool

Once that’s done your pan is ready to use.

For the cook, place the pan into the pizza oven on a medium heat.  Once the pan is hot, add the chicken thighs and place the pan back into the oven.

About half way through add the chopped red onions and rosemary to the pan and baste the chicken with the butter.

Once the chicken’s juices run clear remove from the oven.

It’s a very easy recipe to follow – this is my adaption from the Ooni.com version – I made only very slight changes.  I used:

  • 5 boneless and skinless chicken thighs
  • Half a sliced Red Onion
  • A handful of fresh Rosemary
  • Some salt
  • Some Olive Oil (optional)

And it tasted delicious.  The chicken was soft and tender with a lovely tangy taste of rosemary.  The onions cooked really well in the butter and tasted great!

The Ooni Sizzler Pan fitted into the Ooni Koda 16 perfectly.  What I really liked about using this oven and pan was how much you could see the chicken sizzling away.  It allowed you to keep a good eye on the cook.

The Ooni Sizzler Pan is made out of cast-iron and has a separate handle with two handle holes on either side and was the main reason why I bought this pan in the Summer.

REVIEW OF THE OONI SIZZLER PAN

There were a number of reasons why I bought this particular pan.  I own a pan exactly the same size as this one, but it has a handle attached to it which cannot be removed.

I used it once in my Ooni Pro and found it wasn’t at all practical for cooking in an oven.  It was great for cooking on a hob or on a grill, but not inside an oven.   There are a number of reasons why a pan with a removable handle is more practical to use in an oven:

  • the detachable handle remains cold.
  • the handle can be clipped onto the side handle grips.
  • the pan has two side handle grips – on opposite sides
  • the grips allow you to rotate your pan in the oven without having to move the food around.
  • The food closest to the flames cooks faster and so you just need to rotate the pan so that the food closer to you also reaches the flame side.  This pan does that easily.
  • All you need to do is take the pan out of the oven with the detachable handle.  Spin the pan 180 degrees on the wood plate, then replace the pan back into the oven.   This will ensure all the meat in your pan gets an even flamed cook.  Perfect!
